Moving to Vancouver? Here’s what the city is all about!
Vancouver is one of the few places where you can ski down a mountain, swim in the ocean, go whale watching, and walk through ancient forests, all in one day! This coastal city sits between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, making it the perfect city to move to. The oceanic climate makes it the warmest city in Canada. Just remember to purchase a rain jacket, as it rains quite often in Vancouver and you’ll blend in with locals in no time.
Adventures:
There is an endless list of things to do and see in the city, plus with being a local, you can take quick road trips outside the city and visit tourist hotspots during quieter times. Here are some of the must-see spots once you’re all settled in from your move.
- Stanley Park: One of the best urban parks and the third largest park in North America, Stanley Park is a crowd pleaser. We highly recommend renting a bike and cycling the Stanley Park Seawall while enjoying the view of the mountains and Lions Gate Bridge. Cycling is the best way to get around the park.
- Capilano Suspension Bridge: One of the most popular attractions in Vancouver. This West Coast rainforest has a handful of activities to do besides walking the famous suspension bridge.
- Vancouver Aquarium: Located in Stanley Park, this tourist magnet is the centre of marine research, ocean literacy education, conservation, and marine animal rehabilitation. During your tour, you’ll get to learn how essential the salmon is to the coastal ecosystem.
- Sea-to-Sky Highway: If you’re one to enjoy going on long drives, this scenic route is the one for you. BC Highway 99 is a frequent road taken by locals when they head up north to Whistler, BC. There are fun stops and historic sites along the way. So be sure to map out the course and not miss out on anything, and jump into your car.
Culture, Shopping, and More:
Vancouver is known for its high-rise, unparallel nature and is a very popular filming location. It’s the most ethnically and linguistically diverse city in Canada and has a vibrant art, theatre and music scene.
- Granville Island is a popular cultural and shopping district in Vancouver. The Granville Island Public Market is the hub of the island, with restaurants and vendors. In the summer, be sure to enjoy the mini-tugboat ferries.
- Chinatown: The oldest Chinatown in Canada holds a lot of history dating back to the late 1800s when Chinese immigrants arrived to work on B.C.’s railroads and the mines. You’ll meet friendly people, lost treasures, and the perfect spot to get groceries for the week. Chinatown also has restaurants on every corner, so do visit it on an empty stomach.
- Gastown: The famous steam clock located in Gastown is amongst indie shops and Victorian buildings. It is the perfect place to window shop and enjoy some delicious food from the many cafes.
- 2010 Winter Olympics: The city also hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, marking it the third city to hold this monumental event after Montreal (1976 Summer Olympics) and Calgary (1988 Winter Olympics).
