How Much Does Moving in Calgary Cost?

Typical costs and durations based on data from thousands of moves across Canada in 2025.

Home SizeAvg. DurationTypical Cost Range
Studio4–5 hoursFrom ~$550

2-Bedroom House6–7 hours~$1,000–$1,400
3-Bedroom House7–9 hours~$1,200–$1,800
4-Bedroom House9–11 hours~$1,700–$2,500

Calgary vs. Other Canadian Cities

Calgary moves are more affordable than major markets like Toronto (avg. $1,693) and generally on par with prairie cities like Saskatoon ($1,034) and Winnipeg ($809). Beltline and downtown condo moves tend to be more expensive due to elevator logistics and parking challenges.

Peak season tip: Summer moves (June–August) cost 20–30% more than winter. Avoid Stampede week (early July) when traffic downtown is gridlocked and demand spikes. Best value month? October — mild weather, low demand, and better availability than any summer date. See our month-by-month analysis.

Calgary Neighbourhood Moving Guide

What our crews know about moving in and out of Calgary's most popular neighbourhoods.

Beltline

High

High-rise condos, mid-rise apartments

  • Street Use Permit needed — $31.50/day to reserve curb space
  • Elevator booking 5+ business days ahead (peak months need more); keys revoked at your time slot deadline
  • Most buildings require Certificate of Insurance (COI)
  • Avoid Stampede week (early July) — major road closures throughout

Kensington / Hillhurst

Mod–High

Heritage homes, walk-ups, modern condos

  • Heritage homes have narrow staircases and tight doorframes — measure first
  • Walk-up buildings (no elevator) are common — stair carry fees apply
  • Side streets are narrow; plan truck positioning carefully
  • Pedestrian-heavy near Kensington Road — navigate carefully

Mission

Mod–High

Low/mid-rise condos, heritage conversions, townhomes

  • Parkade clearance varies — confirm height before arriving with a large truck
  • Stampede proximity worse than Beltline; plan around July
  • 4th Street SW congestion on weekends affects truck access
  • Older walk-up condos have stair-carry challenges

Bridgeland

Mod–High

Character homes, modern infills, mid-rise condos

  • Steepest grades in Calgary — 4a St NE at 14.5%, alleys up to 30%
  • Scout the specific street before move day for winter access
  • Narrow residential streets — back in from main arteries
  • Bridgeland Main Streets project causing disruptions through summer 2026

Inglewood

Low–Mod

Character homes, duplexes, small apartments

  • Green Line LRT construction ramping up — Blackfoot Trail bridge and elevated guideway contracts in progress
  • 9th Ave congested on weekends with gallery/shop visitors
  • Many homes have useful rear-lane access for loading
  • Heritage building dimensions — doors and stairs may be non-standard

Brentwood

Low–Mod

Detached homes, growing condo stock near LRT

  • September 1 is extremely busy — U of C student turnover
  • Crowchild Trail and University Drive congested during term
  • Mixed housing age — newer infills have tighter lot lines
  • Generally well-laid-out streets with adequate parking

Tuscany

Low

Detached homes, townhomes, some condos

  • Wide suburban streets, ample driveway space — easy access
  • Cul-de-sacs common — plan turnaround for large trucks
  • Distance from downtown adds travel time for multi-trip moves
  • Ravine-adjacent homes may have steeper driveways

Cranston

Low

Starter homes to luxury estates, townhomes, condos

  • Modern street design — wide roads, good truck access
  • Fish Creek Park roads have limited connectivity — plan routes
  • Riverstone luxury area has steeper terrain near the river
  • Access via Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail — factor highway time

Mahogany

Low

Detached homes, townhomes, condos (lakeside community)

  • HOA rules may restrict moving hours or truck parking — check CC&Rs
  • Flat terrain, modern streets — generally easy truck access
  • Far SE edge of the city — factor in travel time
  • Active construction in newer phases may affect access

Seton

Low–Mod

Modern townhomes, condos, new detached homes

  • Still actively developing — construction equipment and detours common
  • Some buildings may not have established moving protocols yet
  • Hospital area (South Health Campus) creates traffic at shift changes
  • Green Line LRT extension envisioned in long-term plan but not funded in current Phase 1

Airdrie

Low

Detached homes, townhomes (satellite city, 30 km north)

  • Balzac Interchange replacement ($148M total, QEII/Hwy 566) — construction through ~2028
  • Budget 35–45 min each way to Calgary during construction/rush hour
  • Wide suburban streets — easy truck access once off the highway

Cochrane

Low–Mod

Detached homes, estate properties (satellite town, 30 km west)

  • Big Hill is 3.5 km at 7% grade — challenging for loaded trucks in winter
  • Hwy 1A/22 interchange now open; final paving and landscaping through summer 2026
  • Mountain weather can differ from Calgary — earlier snowfall
  • 30-min drive to Calgary becomes 45+ min during construction/rush hour

Calgary Moving Rules & Bylaws

Everything you need to know about noise hours, parking, snow bans, and condo rules before your move.

Noise Hours (Community Standards Bylaw 32M2023)

DayMoving AllowedQuiet Hours
Monday–Saturday7:00 AM – 10:00 PM10:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Sundays & Holidays9:00 AM – 10:00 PM10:00 PM – 9:00 AM

Loading a truck during quiet hours: $250 fine. Idling a truck >20 min in a residential area: $300 fine.

Parking for Moving Trucks

  • Active loading/unloading is exempt from time limits — but the truck must be actively in use
  • Street Use Permit ($31.50 + GST/day) — required to reserve curb space. Apply at epermits.calgary.ca with 5 business days notice. See our parking permits guide
  • Temporary No Parking signs are included with the permit — must be posted 12 hours in advance
  • Most residential streets have a 2-hour parking limit. RPP zones are enforced 24/7
  • Standard parking fines: $40 (within 10 days), $50 (10–30 days), $75 (after 30 days)

Snow Route Parking Bans

Calgary uses a priority snow clearing system (different from Edmonton). When a snow ban is declared, vehicles must be removed from marked snow routes (look for blue signs with white snowflakes). Bans typically begin 18 hours after snowfall ends and last up to 72 hours.

  • Fine: $80 (within 10 days) — vehicles may be towed
  • Check your address: maps.calgary.ca/SnowRouteParkingBans/
  • Sign up for alerts: roadsnotifications.calgary.ca or follow @yyctransport
  • Downtown exception: snow bans only apply overnight (9 PM – 6 AM)

Low Clearance Warning: Riverfront Ave Underpass (Centre Street Bridge) — 3.6 m (11 ft 10 in)

Standard moving trucks are 3.9–4.1 m tall. The Riverfront Avenue underpass (beneath Centre Street Bridge) caused 10 of 15 bridge strikes in 2015. The Centre Street Bridge lower deck is even lower at 2.7 m. Also watch for Plus 15 pedestrian walkways downtown — some are posted below 4.0 m. Use Memorial Drive or alternative river crossings instead. See our road construction guide for all low-clearance points.

Condo Moving Checklist

Most Calgary condos — especially in the Beltline, Mission, and downtown — require these steps. For the full breakdown, see our Calgary condo moving rules guide. Call your property management company at least 2 weeks before your move.

Book the freight elevator

Minimum 5 business days ahead — peak months require earlier. Typical slots: 4 hours.

Get a Certificate of Insurance (COI)

Ask your mover to provide one naming the condo corporation as additionally insured.

Pay the damage deposit

Typically $200–$500 refundable. Some buildings also charge a non-refundable move fee.

Confirm loading dock clearance

Some docks only fit 12-foot trucks — arriving with a 14-footer means being turned away.

Take photos of common areas

Document hallways, elevator, and lobby before and after to protect your deposit.

Ask about elevator pads

Some buildings provide them; others require your mover to supply protective padding.

Waste Collection for New Residents

Calgary uses a three-cart system: Blue (recycling), Green (compost), and Black (garbage). Total monthly cost: ~$20.51 (2026 rate), billed through ENMAX. Moving into an existing home? Carts should already be there. Missing carts? Call 311. Look up your collection schedule at calgary.ca/cartschedule. For ENMAX, ATCO Gas, and everything else you need to set up, see our Calgary utilities guide.

Useful Contacts

  • 311 (within Calgary) or 403-268-2489 (outside) — 24/7 city services
